iDEAL payments are now available in Squarespace Payments
Starting 25 February 2026, iDEAL payments will be available directly through Squarespace.
This is facilitated through their own payment provider, Squarespace Payments. In this article, you will learn what you need to know, how much it costs, and whether you can stop using Plug&Pay now.
iDEAL in Squarespace - important information
iDEAL works only through Squarespace Payments, not through Stripe.
Are you currently using Stripe? If so, you'll need to switch to Squarespace Payments in order to offer iDEAL.
Squarespace Payments and Stripe cannot be active at the same time in the same account.
You can have your Stripe information migrated automatically, or you can manually create a new Squarespace Payments account.
How do you enable iDEAL in Squarespace?
To offer iDEAL payments, you need to enable Squarespace Payments:
Open your Squarespace dashboard, click on your website, and in the left-hand menu, go to Settings (gear icon) > Selling > Payments
Enable Squarespace Payments
Follow all the steps to set up your Payments account (enter your business information, link your bank account, etc.)
You can enable iDEAL (and enable or disable other payment methods) by going to Settings (gear icon) > Selling > Payments > Manage Settings > Payment Methods
Note: Once you enable Squarespace Payments, your Stripe connection will be disconnected.
Costs of an iDEAL payment
For an iDEAL transaction via Squarespace Payments, you pay €0.29 per transaction. This is the most affordable option for letting your customers pay.
For comparison:
For credit card payments, you pay 2.9% + €0.30 per transaction
For a SEPA Direct Debit payment, you pay €0.35 per transaction
For a Klarna payment, you pay 5.49% + €0.30 per transaction
Note: Rates are subject to change. Please visit the Squarespace website for the most up-to-date information.
Using Squarespace Payments for the first time
Please note the following points:
Make sure your store's currency is set to Euros (via Settings (gear icon) > Selling > Payments)
Disable Klarna if you do not want to offer it. The transaction fees for this are relatively high (see the fee overview above)
Check your checkout settings under: Settings → Selling → Checkout
Always make a test payment:
Check which emails you receive
Check that the VAT settings are correct
Make sure the invoice includes all the necessary information for both you and your customer. If needed, add a field for company name and VAT number using an additional form. You can do this through the checkout settings
What is and isn't possible with iDEAL in Squarespace Payments
Currently possible:
One-time payments
Not (yet) possible:
iDEAL is not available as a payment option for subscriptions or recurring payments. For example, if you use Squarespace Courses and want customers to pay monthly, that’s not possible. However, you can use SEPA Direct Debit for that.
iDEAL is currently not available for Acuity Scheduling
Bancontact payments are not available. Squarespace has no plans to offer Bancontact either.
Should I keep using Plug&Pay: yes or no?
Before iDEAL payments were available on Squarespace, Plug&Pay was a good solution for offering iDEAL. Whether you can cancel your Plug&Pay subscription immediately depends on your situation.
Plug&Pay offers significantly more marketing features than the standard Squarespace Payments checkout. The Plug&Pay checkout page alone is much more comprehensive. But consider features like advanced funnel options, adding checkout deals, upsells, order bumps, and advanced invoicing.
The invoices generated by Plug&Pay also include all the information you need for your records.
If you want to offer Bancontact payments to your customers, you should continue using Plug&Pay. Squarespace Payments does not support Bancontact. It is not expected to do so in the future.
So don’t automatically switch to Squarespace Payments just because iDEAL is now available. Every option has its pros and cons. The best choice depends on your business model, your marketing strategy, where your customers are located, and your administrative preferences.
Alternatives to Plug&Pay include PayPro, Stripe Payment Links, Shopify, and Ecwid. This blog post outlines the features of these tools.
