Creating a Squarespace webshop with iDEAL payments in 2026
Update Feb. 25, 2026:
iDEAL payments are now available in Squarespace Payments. Read here to find out what this means. Unfortunately, Bancontact payments are not available. If Bancontact is important to you, the article below is still relevant.
Squarespace offers the option to build a web shop. However, checkout remains an issue for Dutch and Belgian customers. iDEAL and Bancontact payments will still not be supported in 2026.
Since December 2025, SEPA payments have been possible, but this is different from iDEAL. Below you can read what is and isn't possible in Squarespace, and what workarounds there are.
Why Doesn't Squarespace Support iDEAL?
Squarespace is originally an American platform. For years, the focus was on credit cards and PayPal. European payment methods such as iDEAL and the Belgian Bancontact have therefore never been a priority.
Stripe can be linked to Squarespace and supports iDEAL and Bancontact. However, this does not mean that these payment methods will automatically be available on your website. Squarespace must also support iDEAL and Bancontact, which it currently does not.
What does this mean in concrete terms?
Direct iDEAL or Bancontact payments are not possible in Squarespace.
You always need an external solution/workaround.
Your checkout process becomes more complex (not necessarily for your customer, but for you).
What is possible within Squarespace?
Credit cards and wallets
Squarespace supports the following by default:
Credit cards
This is often sufficient for an international audience. But not for Dutch customers.
SEPA via Squarespace Payments
Since December 2025, Squarespace has been offering SEPA Direct Debit through Squarespace Payments. That's a step forward, but there are some caveats.
What is SEPA within Squarespace?
SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) makes it possible to debit amounts in euros directly from a bank account.
Important conditions:
You need an active Squarespace Payments account.
Your online store must be set to euros.
Once you activate Squarespace Payments, the connection with Stripe will be terminated (if you had connected Stripe).
Limitations of SEPA in Squarespace, including
Not available for subscriptions
Only available for one-time payments
Customers must enter their IBAN and authorize a mandate.
Costs and processing, including
Processing fee: $0.35 per transaction
Processing time: 3 to 4 business days on average
SEPA is therefore usable, but not a replacement for iDEAL. Read all about SEPA payments in this Squarespace help desk article.
What Are Your Options If You Want to Offer iDEAL?
1. Use Payment Links
You can link payment links to buttons on your website, for example. This means you link to an external checkout.
Suitable if you:

no shopping cart required (check out one product at a time)
Popular tools for payment links:
2. Using an external online store
You link a separate online store to your Squarespace website.
Suitable if you:
sells multiple products
need a shopping cart (check out multiple products at once)
Popular options:
Comparing Payment Solutions
Please note: check the most current rates for the various subscriptions on the websites of these providers. And carefully review the differences in transaction costs.
Which Solution Is Right for You?
You sell a few individual products/services.
SEPA is possible via Squarespace itself, but be aware of all the preconditions. Or use payment links via software such as Plug&Pay, PayPro, or Stripe Payment Links. You sell multiple products/services that need to be billed together.
Use Shopify or Ecwid to create a web store. Run it alongside your website or integrate it into your website. You are starting a web shop and need a lot of e-commerce functionalities.
Consider working directly with Shopify instead of Squarespace. Read here what Shopify is and how it works.
Future developments: iDEAL and WERO
Squarespace has been working on offering iDEAL in Squarespace Payments for quite some time. However, this has not yet been implemented. The arrival of WERO, the new European payment standard, is likely to play a role in this. As soon as more information becomes available, this article will of course be updated.
Squarespace has no plans to offer Bancontact payments.
Conclusion
SEPA via Squarespace Payments is a step forward, but not a solution for iDEAL. It is less user-friendly and not suitable for subscriptions.
If you want to offer iDEAL payments, you will need an external solution. The option that suits you best depends on your type of business, the number of products or services you offer, and the desired functionalities.
