iDeal payments in Squarespace with Plug&Pay

Deze blogpost bevat affiliate links.

You probably came across this blog post because you're facing the issue that Squarespace doesn't support iDeal payments, the most popular payment method in The Netherlands. And indeed, that's correct.

What you can do is bring this up with Squarespace. The more people who raise this question, the greater the chance that it will be made possible in the future.

But until then you can use the workaround I will describe below. Using Plug&Pay. (you can set the language to English)
Actually, this workaround is not bad at all. I believe you will find this tool very useful. For instance, if you sell multiple products or services online, you will have the option to create separate payment/checkout pages and add ‘kassakoopjes’ and upsells. It offers more option than Squarespace.

Create payment links with Plug&Pay

Each product or service you sell you add as a Product in Plug&Pay. Next, for each Product you create a Checkout (payment link). You can add a payment link to a button in your Squarespace website. You do this for each product or service.

For each product, you can create a separate checkout page. You have the option to choose from several templates that you can customize with your own text, USPs, and customer reviews.

Additionally, for each product/service, you can set up a separate Thank You page. This is the page someone sees after making the payment. You have multiple options for this as well. You can create a Thank You page with a Plug&Pay tempalte, or you can enter the URL of a Thank You page you've created in Squarespace. (For example, you could also redirect someone to the Create Account page for an online training.)

Depending on your subscription, Plug&Pay offers features such as discount codes, subscriptions, inventory management, ‘kassakoopjes’, and upsells. In short, even if Squarespace will offer iDeal payments in the future, Plug&Pay will likely still offer way more options.

Mollie as a payment provider

If you're going to use Plug&Pay, you'll also need a Mollie account. Mollie is the payment provider they colaborate with. You pay Mollie a small fee per transaction. For example, a payment via iDeal costs 29 cents.

Update June 2024: Plug&Pay announced they will also start working with Stripe in the near future.

Connecting Moneybird

If you use Moneybird as your (Dutch) accounting software, you can integrate it with Plug&Pay. In this setup, invoices are still sent from Plug&Pay, but they are automatically synced to Moneybird. This saves a lot of manual importing, as you prefer to have all your invoices together for your accounting.

Integration Mailblue / Active Campaign

If you use Mailblue (or the English version, Active Campaign), you can also integrate this tool with Plug&Pay. This allows you to automatically add someone to a list in Mailblue after payment. For example, you can start an automation with one or more emails containing more information about the recently purchased product or login information for a course.

The cheapest Mailblue subscription costs 15 euros per month (or 108 euros/year). You can try Mailblue 2 weeks for free.

The costs:

The Lite version costs 15 euros per month or 108 euros with annual payment. With this plan, you can create 3 products and checkouts, use impulse buys, and have a maximum of 50 transactions per month.

The Premium version costs 59 euros per month or 588 euros with annual payment. It includes unlimited products and checkouts, one-click upsells, subscriptions, discount codes, and a maximum of 500 transactions per month.

And then there's the Ultimate version if you want to go all out with an affiliate system.

Do you have a webshop?

If you have created a webshop in Squarespace using the Commerce feature, then Plug&Pay won't be of much use. Plug&Pay only allows you to create individual payment links. For your webshop, you need a tool with a shopping cart in order your website visitors can purchase multiple products at once.
